The Best Ice Cream Shop in Houston? You Get to Decide the Champion

Vote Now — and Win Free Ice Cream for an Entire Year

BY // 06.18.19

Everyone may love ice cream, but not all ice cream is equal. Houston’s a city gifted with great ice cream (and cool treat) options.

But what’s the No. 1 ice cream shop in the Bayou City?

You get to decide by voting for your rightful champ in the PaperCity Best Ice Cream Challenge. The winning Houston ice cream shop takes home serious bragging rights, but you get a chance to win big too.

One voter will be randomly selected to win free ice cream for a year from whichever shop takes the crown. That’s one serious (and almost never-ending) ice cream splurge. You can vote once per day — and the more times you vote, the more chances you have to win.

Here are the 10 championship ice cream contenders:

Creamistry

This science-meets-ice-cream shop harkens back to your sophomore year chemistry class. Choose your flavor, and let the science of liquid-cold nitrogen magically do the rest.

Amy’s Ice Cream

The line at Amy’s may seem never-ending, but you’re in luck, because it moves pretty darn quick. That’s an impressive feat, considering the dazzling chalkboard featuring flavor upon flavor. Amy’s boasts more than 350 tasty rotating options.

Honeychild’s Sweet Creams

Honeychild’s Sweet Creams doesn’t boast an actual brick-and-mortar ice cream shop, but its sweet treats are available a number of coffee shops, restaurants and grocers around Houston. Honeychild’s sweet creams aren’t your average ice creams — instead, these ultra-rich scoops are handmade frozen custards. They’re celebrated for high-quality, locally sourced ingredients.

Sweet Bribery

The tempting treats at Sweet Bribery come courtesy of master pastry chef Sharon Leonard, who formerly whipped up baked goods in the kitchens of State of Grace and Uchi. Her impressive pedigree shows in this Heights ice cream shop.

Fat Cat Creamery

This locovore favorite makes the most of Texas purveyors, from Mill-King Ceremony’s Milk to Ole Dad Farm’s eggs and citrus from The Barry Farm. Fat Cat also brings a steadfast commitment to sustainability, showcased by its compostable packages and spoons made from cornstarch. This is a spot where you can feel good about being bad.

SweetCup Gelato & Sorbet Originale

Texas flair is the name of the game at SweetCup, which has two small Houston shops. Imagine limited parking but huge flavor. The gelato and sorbet are both true to their definition — no plain old masquerading ice cream here.

SweetCup Gelato & Sorbet Originale
SweetCup sells their desserts at two local brick-and-mortars, and Central Markets and Whole Foods state-wide.

Cloud 10 Cremery

This charming ice cream parlor’s award-winning pastry chef Chris Leung blends up the goods a half gallon at a time with premium ingredients. Sizes range from four-ounce cups all the way up to half-gallon cartons in case you’ve just gotta take some home.

Gelazzi

This premier gelato shop announces itself immediately with its ice cream cone sculpture out front and its popular Instagram-worthy Greetings from Houston mural on the side. The flavors are made in small batches using family recipes that date back to the 1950s.

milk + sugar

The couple behind this spot are big-time ice cream enthusiasts. They decided to do it their way in Houston with a focus on mix-ins. Neither froyo, nor gelato, and certainly not low-calorie, milk + sugar’s ice cream comes with names every bit as funky as the flavors.

Smoosh Cookies

Smoosh mixes things up with gourmet ice cream sandwiches, getting rich ice cream all cozy with freshly baked book-ends. The gourmet ice cream sandwiches could be dismissed as just a novelty, but the quality keeps people coming back for more.

This poll has now ended – the winner of PaperCity‘s Best Ice Cream Challenge is milk + sugar.

Congratulations to Kevin Lee for scoring a $250 gift card to the winning restaurant.
