Beloved Dallas Restaurant is Closing For Good
Facebook Plea For More Business Cannot Save The Blind Butcher
By Natalie Gempel //
Sadly, this weekend will be the last time Dallas diners will be able to enjoy The Blind Butcher’s smoky meats and rich poutine. The beloved Lower Greenville restaurant will officially close on Sunday evening.
The vintage-inspired bar and restaurant was known for its gourmet meats and wide selection of craft beers. While The Blind Butcher has been a favorite among critics, foodies and beer snobs since it opened in January 2014, the past four-and-a-half years have seen major changes to Lower Greenville – including the installation of a midnight curfew.
Even great restaurants have had a tough time surviving in the neighborhood.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce our last day of business will be on Sunday June 10. This is a day that we tried very hard to avoid and we want to thank all of you that helped us stick around this long,” the Blind Butcher’s owners wrote in a Facebook post, revealing the decision.
Just five months ago, the owners informed customers of the restaurant’s struggles through another (refreshingly honest) Facebook post.
“Truth be told, the last 18 months have not been kind to us,” the post reads. The extensive construction on Lower Greenville, as well as the influx of new restaurants had slowed business for The Blind Butcher.
“This is not a notice for pity but as realistic small business owners we wanted to face the facts head on and give everyone, including ourselves, a chance to fight for this city’s restaurant scene and our place in it. It is our hope that you guys will come out and support us.”
While the admission prompted an outpouring of support from the Dallas community, it apparently wasn’t enough to keep the restaurant afloat.
The Blind Butcher owners Matt Tobin and Josh Yingling are also behind Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House, and Goodfriend Package Store. According to the owner’s closing announcement, the defunct restaurant’s popular sausages may soon be available at Goodfriend Package Store.
