Cult Donut Chain Moves Into Texas With Major Sweet Fried Ambitions: New Houston Shop’s First, Dallas to Follow

BY // 12.15.17

There’s really nothing that can’t be fixed with sweet, fried dough. Duck Donuts, touted as the fastest-growing donut chain in the United States, is opening its first location in Texas — and it’s in Houston. Duck Donuts is moving into 3157 West Holcombe, with a projected opening date of early January.

The chain plans to expand to San Antonio and Dallas later in 2018.

Duck Donuts was founded by Russell DiGilio in the town of Duck, North Carolina in the Outer Banks after his family noticed a lack of fresh, made-to-order donuts. Duck quickly became a cult favorite thanks to its made-to-order donut option, known as the Duck Donut as well as an inventive and seasonal menu of pre-selected flavors.

Popular choices include their Maple Icing with Chopped Bacon as well as the winter-favorite Mint Icing, speckled with Oreo crumbs, and drizzled with hot fudge. To make your own signature Duck Donut, start with Duck Donut’s vanilla cake donuts, which you can then coat with choices like Cinnamon Sugar, Glazed, Peanut Butter, and more. Then, pick a variety of toppings, such as sprinkles, bacon pieces, and shredded coconut, and choose your favorite drizzle. You can’t go wrong with hot fudge, marshmallow, salted caramel, raspberry or blackberry.

The possibilities are endless. Finish it off with a coffee or hot chocolate for the perfect treat, anytime of day.

The first Texas location of Duck Donuts will be owned by Houstonians Allison and Pete Cunningham, who fell in love with the donuts while on a vacation to the Outer Banks, and knew they had to bring the concept to Houston. Allison tells PaperCity that mint will be their seasonal flavor through February, with a winter-inspired assortment of flavor combinations to try.

“We hope to be a valuable part of Houston’s community” she says, “from providing unique and exciting food industry jobs, giving back to local organizations, and offering an experience that customers will want to share with the whole family”.

While Houston isn’t lacking and already possesses a wide selection of donuts (Christy’s Donuts and Morningstar are stellar, and Shipleys are everywhere), there’s always room for more fried and sugar coated dough, especially for those with a nonstop sweet tooth.
