Dallas’ Anti Tex-Mex Restaurant Shutters to Get Bigger: New Location Brings Patio Power

Urban Taco shuttered its Mockingbird Station location, but don’t worry — the tacos and tasty dips will return in no time. The modern Mexican restaurant mini chain has been a staple of the area for a decade, and now the lease on the current location is expiring. Rather than renew the lease, Urban Taco signed a 10-year lease on a different, larger space nearby.

The new Urban Taco location will also be in Mockingbird Station. The new space will give the restaurant more room and, most importantly, a patio.

The move won’t change the taqueria’s well-liked menu, which is broken down into categories of salsas, guacamoles, quesos, ceviches and more. None of which should be confused for Tex Mex. Urban Taco is strictly modern Mexican. The restaurant rebels against the ever-popular cuisine, adopting the slogan, “Friends don’t let friends eat Tex Mex.”

Founder Markus Pinyero often visits his native Mexico for inspiration and to ensure Urban Taco’s authenticity. The fresh and seasonally-driven menu has been a long lasting hit in Dallas.

“After 10 years in business, we felt it was perfect timing to gain more square footage and add a patio but stay in the same area. Mockingbird Station has proven to be a successful location for us,” founder Pinyero said in a statement.

The now-closed Urban Taco at Mockingbird Station was the restaurant’s first location. It opened a second restaurant in Uptown on McKinney Ave in 2010.

The Uptown outpost will not be affected by the changes, and you can get your Urban Taco fix there while the new Mockingbird location in under construction.

Luckily, it won’t be long before the popular Mexican spot returns to Mockingbird Station. Urban Taco is expected to reopen in mid September, though an exact date hasn’t been set.

We’re hoping it’s sooner rather than later. Patio weather is in full effect and we could use a Urban Swirl marg and an order of Chips y Salsas.
