This Den of Amazing Rugs Turns Into a Grand Symphony Stage
A Bollywood Star and a Surprise Singing Lawyer Enliven the Scene
By Shelby Hodge //
We walked into Abrahams Oriental Rugs salon on Post Oak Boulevard to share a cocktail while saluting the Houston Symphony and Share Our Secrets. But we couldn’t help that our attentions strayed to the amazing collection of rugs.
We swooned over the traditional carpets and were captivated by the contemporary carpets that had this writer thinking of a complete casa redecoration.
But I digress. A well-heeled gathering of more than 120 poured into the chic salon where they were welcomed by hosts/owners and long-time symphony supporters Omana and Sam Abraham, a former symphony board member. For the party, a string quartet performed classical notes while waiters offering Italian-influenced hors d’oeuvres from El Tiempo Catering circled the shop packed with thousands of rug selections.
The program, emceed by SOS’ Preity Bhagia, included bon mots from SOS founder Biki Mohindra, Abraham’s first interior design client (in the ’70s) Susan Arnoldy Hansen, the symphony’s Mary Beth Mosley and long-time symphony board members Helen Shaffer and Jesse Tutor. A special tribute to the Abrahams was given by their daughters, Annie Thomas and Rachel Duvvuri.
The program kicked into very high gear when DJ Chante J. Chiverto revved up the Bollywood beats and glamorous Bollywood star Henna Shah gyrated through the party scene in a pulsating dance routine. And in a surprise to many, the Abraham’s son-in-law, attorney Raj Duvvuri, stepped in for a solo performance, a talent he did not acquire while earning his law degree from Harvard!
Who: Valerie and Tracy Dieterich, Farida Abjani, Wick and Rob Rowland, Dick Hansen, Sam and Mary Yager, Susan and Edward Osterberg, Diane and Kemp McMillan, Bob Weiner, Beth Wolff, and Barbara and Barry Lewis.
