Houston Texans Stars Reveal Their Secret Food Loves and Hates: What Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt and Co. Want for Dinner
BY Shelby Hodge // 01.22.18Chris & Stacy Clark
You’re not going to find J.J. Watt or punter Shane Lechler chowing down on cauliflower anytime soon and don’t even think of serving kicker Jon Weeks anything with avocado. On the other hand, if you want to see quarterback Deshaun Waston at your table, invite him over for steak and shrimp hibachi.
These are just a few of the Houston Texans foodie loves and hates as revealed in the third edition of the Houston Texans Cookbook. The team and management along with their wives, girlfriends and moms contributed their favorite recipes to the book while the players filled in the blanks in a special section detailing their likes and dislikes.
Family photos, stories behind the recipes, family kitchen competitions — there is plenty to absorb between the recipe for the 10-pound meatloaf that DeAndre Hopkins‘ mom is known for and the recipe for New Orleans shrimp etouffée presented by offensive tackle Chris Clark and his wife, Stacy.
Among the contributors are Texans owners Janice and Bob McNair, who provide Sister’s South Carolina peach cobbler, and Texans president Jamey Rootes and wife Melissa, who not only reveal the snowy tradition behind their New Year’s day spicy gumbo but also provide the recipe.
The most fun is the Player Favorites section where the questions include which Texan would you most trust to cook for you. Lechler, Breno Giacomini, Corey Moore and Tyler Ervin all named Whitney Mercilus as the Texan most likely to succeed in the kitchen.
“Many of these efforts are possible thanks to the support of our Lady Texans, the wives and significant others of the Texans players, coaches and executive staff,” Janice McNair writes in the forward. “These ladies are instrumental in the Texans’ community outreach efforts, and this cookbook would not be possible without their support.”
The book is available at the Houston Texans store at NRG Stadium and online here. All proceeds from sale of the book go to the Houston Texans Foundation.
