Rice University’s Biggest Supporters Have Kept Things Going For Four Decades Now — and the MOB Loves It

Could Dr. Walter McReynolds have imagined back in 1984 when he founded “An Evening in Rice’s Honour” that some 42 years later, the fundraiser for Rice University Athletics would continue with force, raising substantial funds for support of athletic scholarships, special projects and the continued advancement of Rice Athletics?
With the latest dinner at River Oaks Country Club, proceeds from the biennial fundraiser have approached $7.5 million.
McReynolds, a former Rice quarterback, and attorney Bucky Allshouse, a former Rice defensive back, have chaired the event with their wives Linda McReynolds and Cynthia Allshouse since its inception.

As is tradition, supporters were greeted on the steps of the country club by the Rice University Marching Band, aka the MOB, known for their wacky attire an playful programming. Adding to the spirited welcome to the throng of Rice alumni, athletics supporters and Houston community leaders were the uniformed Rice cheerleaders.
Allshouse emceed the program that included remarks from Rice board of trustess chair Robert Ladd and interim athletic director Eric George.
George reported on student athletes excelling athletically and academically with five team conference championships, two additional postseason appearances, an individual national champion in javelin and 321 students athletes listed on the American Conference All-Academic team.

The Distinguished Owl Club Awards, recognizing individuals for their leadership, service and support of Rice Athletics, were presented to Elle Anderson, class of 2000; and Clarke Anderson 2001; Brian D. Patterson 1984; the late Karen Hess Rogers 1968; Ben Westcott ,1997; and Willis T. Wilson Jr., 1982.
The evening concluded with remarks from Rice University president Reginald DesRoches.
