It was quite the Sunday brunch gathering at the Museum District home of Cheryl and Percy Creuzot when the successful duo invited friends in for a meet-and-greet with U.S. Senate candidate and Houston City Councilwoman Amanda K. Edwards. Joining in hosting the event was fashion designer and philanthropist Tina Knowles-Lawson, who jetted in from Los Angeles for both the Ensemble Theatre gala and the fundraiser.
It was the first official stepping out party for Edwards, who in July tossed her hat into the Democratic primary with the ultimate goal of defeating U.S. Senator John Cornyn. To have the early support of activist Knowles-Lawson, mother of Beyoncé and grandmother to Blue Ivy, was a meaningful PR coup.
But to Knowles-Lawson, who is active Los Angeles’s entertainment community, this was more than that.
“I was deeply impressed by Amanda’s tenacity, commitment to servant leadership and her passion for making a real difference in Texans’ lives,” she says. “Amanda had humble beginnings, much like myself, and her story is a testament to what is possible.”
The capacity gathering of more than 150 was treated to a lavish buffet from Bennie Ferrell Catering and Frenchy’s fried chicken, from the Creuzot family restaurant business.
“I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for my candidacy during the first fundraising event,” Edwards says. “It was a full house, and I wish I could bottle the positive energy and enthusiasm that was in that room. I’m so thankful to Cheryl Creuzot, Tina Knowles-Lawson, and the host committee for helping me build the resources I need to be successful in this race, and bring my brand of results-oriented servant leadership to the U.S. Senate.”
For Creuzot, long-time friend of Knowles-Lawson, it was a thoughtful process in deciding to support Edwards.
“I personally had a tough decision because of others that I highly respect in this race, but at the end of the day, supporting Amanda Edwards for U.S. Senate was an easy decision and the right one,” Creuzot says. “Amanda is a brilliant young woman whose purpose in life is to be a servant leader. She is simply dependable and will do what she says she will do — unlike most.”
