Beyond their undeniable style, Crystal Charity Ball’s Ten Best Dressed Women of Dallas are community leaders who are devoted to Dallas and its residents.

Today, we’re chatting with second-year honoree Shannon Graham, a local philanthropist and community volunteer who currently serves as president of the Dallas Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary. Through her work with Salvation Army of North Texas, Equest, Turtle Creek Conservancy, AmazingGrace.Life, and her role on the Dallas Women’s Club’s board, Graham puts her words into action for the community.

What do you love about the Dallas community?

What I love most about the Dallas community is its incredible spirit of generosity and support. Dallas is a city where people genuinely show up for one another and believe in giving back. I’m continually inspired by the way our community comes together to support those in need, champion important causes, and create opportunities for others to thrive. There is also something special about the warmth and optimism of Dallas — we are so proud of our city, and it shows!

What is your proudest accomplishment as a community volunteer?

I think one of my most memorable experiences was co-chairing the Council for Life Luncheon during COVID. It was a time that taught me the importance of being able to graciously pivot, pivot, and pivot again!

I learned to adapt to circumstances beyond our control without complaint, but rather with gratitude — for the incredible donors who continued to support us, and, most importantly, for the beneficiaries whose needs remained at the heart of everything we were doing, regardless of what the event ultimately looked like. It was a wonderful lesson in flexibility, perspective, and approaching challenges with a positive attitude and a grateful heart.

Outside of Crystal Charity Ball, what Dallas charitable organization is nearest and dearest to you?

Outside of Crystal Charity Ball, the charitable organization nearest and dearest to my heart is The Salvation Army of North Texas. I’m especially inspired by the Army’s commitment to helping people in our community who are experiencing poverty, addiction, or homelessness by providing food, shelter, emergency assistance, and opportunities to build more stable lives. I’m continually inspired by the breadth of the Army’s work and the way it reaches so many people across North Texas with compassion, dignity, and hope. It is an organization that truly makes a difference, and I’m grateful to be part of its mission.

What is something you’re looking forward to in the year ahead?

I’m looking forward to a year filled with meaningful work with the nonprofits I’m fortunate to be involved with, including The Salvation Army, Crystal Charity Ball, The Stewpot, AmazingGrace.Life, and the Bullock Texas History Foundation. I’m excited to continue supporting the causes that are important to me while also making time for the people I love and the friendships that make life so special.

What is a favorite memory from an event you’ve chaired or volunteered for?

Probably chairing the very fun “Day at the Races” for Turtle Creek Park Conservancy with Beth Layton. We both believe in being truly hands-on, so we did everything together — from menu tastings with mint juleps to hot-gluing party props the week before the event! We worked hard, laughed a lot, and had such a wonderful time bringing it all together for a great cause.

Why does serving the Dallas community matter to you?

Serving the Dallas community matters deeply to me because I was raised by parents who believed in helping people who needed a hand up. They quietly supported others in ways that our family often didn’t know about until after they had passed away. In the years that followed, people shared stories with us about my parents’ kindness and generosity, and those stories were incredibly meaningful and inspiring to our family.

Their example left a lasting impression on me. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to follow in my parents’ footsteps and to use the gifts I’ve been given to help others. Serving our community is a way for me to honor their legacy while making a difference in the lives of people who may simply need a little encouragement, support, or a helping hand.

What is something you’ve learned from working alongside the women of Crystal Charity Ball?

One of the greatest things I’ve learned from working alongside the women of Crystal Charity Ball is the power of women coming together with a shared purpose. I’m continually inspired by their generosity, dedication, and willingness to roll up their sleeves and work hard. I’m so proud to be part of this community of women who are giving their time, energy, and resources to change the lives of underserved children in Dallas County.
