Sweet Potato Queens
Southern Show Revisited in Houston as TUTS Underground Goes Sweet
By Sharon L. Taylor //
In March 2015, TUTS Underground hosted a reading of a new musical, The Sweet Potato Queens, based on the best-selling, semi-autobiographical books by Jill Conner Browne. One year later, the Southern show with a universal heart returns to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts for its world premiere as a fully staged theatrical production.
The creative team is a parade of musical talent: music by Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Melissa Manchester; lyrics by Oscar nominee and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee Sharon Vaughn; and book by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes, whose credits include The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Curtains and Say Goodnight, Gracie.
What’s a Sweet Potato Queen? Visit Browne’s website for the full story. Better yet, read the book that started it all (and became a New York Times bestseller), The Sweet Potato Queens’ Book of Love.
