Now Hear This — Our Fall Wardrobe Lust List: Your Weekly Peek Inside the PaperCity Dallas Office Banter

BY // 09.27.18

Hillery Stack, our recently transplanted Yankee, has been commenting “Why all this talk about fall wardrobes when it’s still 90 degrees outside?” Well, Hillery, us Texans start planning on snuggly cashmere sweaters and leather pants the day after Labor Day no matter what the temperature. In fact, there is a mad dash to Neiman’s fur storage the first evening that a gala is hosted when it’s a brisk 55 degrees.

Hillery will understand soon enough that we need something to look forward to and thus our question to the PaperCity Dallas team this week: What are you hoping will make it’s way into your wardrobe arsenal this fall?

Lisa Collins Shaddock, Senior Editor

I get overly excited about fall shopping (all shopping really), so my favorite purchase this season is one that I’ve already made, and that the PC office is already tired of seeing me wear all the time! I scored some refurbished vintage mules at Feathers in Austin — I try to stop in whenever I am in town. They have an Isabel Marant-esque, pseudo-western look that singlehandedly combines almost every fall trend, without falling victim to any one in particular. I’ve been wearing them with everything from knit dresses to distressed denim.

Speaking of which, I’m fully on board with the new direction for denim silhouettes, which is cooler, slouchier, cropped, and frayed. I found a great pair Zara.

I could honestly go on forever with this list but will end with the item that I have been eyeing to truly make this season’s wardrobe: a Hayward mini shopper. I love the contrast of its relaxed shape in a decadent silk jacquard.

Since discovering M2M (Made to Measure, a relatively new online fashion video network) the world is now my oyster, filled with runway pearls to binge watch. My wish list is quite extensive, so I’ll try to whittle it down. (My boyfriend better be reading this and taking notes for the holidays.)

I actually need new glasses as I think my current prescription is no longer working. (Caution to readers: stay off the tollway if you know I am en route somewhere.) I’ve always been a fan of Major Tom’s (Tom Ford) eyewear and finally found a pair in white.

Channeling my inner rapper is often on my daily to-do list so I have long wished for a fur coat. I just didn’t think I could pull one off. (Kinda like Missoni. Which I discovered a while back makes no sense on me.) Until I saw one being offered by Band of Outsiders. I’ve always loved that label since it’s preppy with an edge (a la Royal Tenenbaums). The coat is amazing in white faux fur and will be perfect for any occasion in Dallas: Cattle Barons Ball, a bat mitzvah, SMU home game.

I fell in love with Lucien Pellat-Finet in the late 1990s. I remember first encountering his slightly kitschy and avant-garde sweaters at Barneys. They were the finest quality cashmere and given the price-point (starting at more than $1,000 — and that was the 1990s) seemed like the ultimate in luxurious decadence. I spied a pair of leopard shorts in his fall collection that seem like the perfect pairing with the white faux fur coat.

I love bomber jackets for the fall — and a chestnut brown one is so chic and a fun twist on the classic black. With Texas weather being so unpredictable, light layering is perfect to make a statement while remaining seasonal.

I love how Dallas does fall… even if its 95 degrees outside, once Labor Day passes, the Dallas Grande Dames hit the town in full-on fall attire. Sky-high heels, leather skinnies and fabulous silk tops. Don’t forget the Texas hair and jewels. I knew I picked the right city!

PS- When is it socially acceptable to bust out my fur?!

Christina Geyer, Dallas Editor in Chief

Contrary to what many people may think based on my job… I am very simple when it comes to fashion and dressing — I’m not a big shopper and definitely not a label addict. For fall, then, I’ll probably just add a few more good cashmere sweaters to my closet and perhaps a wool trouser or two — all in my very limited color palette of white, grey, navy, or black. I’m also in need of a good riding boot: So I’ll open the floor to suggestions of great brands I should pick from.

Note from Billy: CG has actually been admiring the Calvin Klein snoodie (officially I believe it’s called a balaclava) when we are leafing through September issues. I think she needs one for the cold nights ahead or if she decides to channel her inner-Ozark-self (the Snell or Langmore version) and rob some banks.

Samantha Olguin, Senior Account Executive

Fall is my favorite season: pumpkin spice; snuggly sweaters; not having to defend myself for being pale, and the cold being the perfect excuse for me to stay on the couch with a bottle of red. I am basic, I guess — but so be it. Along with all those fall favorites, fall fashion is also my happy place. Here are some of the things I am seriously coveting for my fall wardrobe.

First off, the item I am not coveting: small sunnies. Like, no thank you. Bye. Never. Go big or go home. With that in mind, I plan on going bold. Give me a statement jumpsuit and let’s call it a day — for work, for play, for a cocktail, for anything!

The classic white tee taking on new roles in attire is my jam — like, if you have a cocktail event, wear a white tee and a bomb.com skirt. Yes, please. Also, all hail Brandon Maxwell — love this fellow Texan and everything he does.

Then, there are the sheer dresses: So much yes is involved here. Call it “peek-a-boo-me.” Like, sign me up for sheer everything, with a little something special underneath — know what I mean?! Brock Collection does it oh so well…

And, finally can we talk about never putting your arms in the sleeves again? I mean, sleeves are so 2017 — and, obviously, if you are going to wear something chic off-the-shoulders it can’t be anything other than Chanel, because duh. Oh dreams …

Note from Billy: I’m so on the same page. Being an armless, caped crusader is the only way to enter a room this fall.

Linda Kenney, Account Executive

I need a turban! Having worn one at my wedding, I am experiencing a fondness for the multifarious turbans appearing on fall runways, perfect for that certain, “Je ne sais quoi.”

Max Trowbridge, Editor At Large

I’m all over the place for fall must-have items, I need a few good basics and a few fun styles. I’m coveting neutral tones that include winter white with camel and the faithful leopard print.

Or, better yet send a message to the office, handwritten on the Smythson stationery of your choice — and feel free to include a bottle of Veuve. Champagne really helps get the ideas flowing.

Look for the next installment of Now Hear This from Billy Fong next Thursday.
