Dallas weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity‘s new events calendar offers a curated look at all of the best things to do in North Texas. But everyone can still use an expert.

PaperCity‘s Weekend Expert Megan Ziots culls our calendar for your must dos in this regular weekly series. A Fort Worth film festival, early 2000s iconic rock band, and holiday ballet are some of the events that made this week’s cut.

Lone Star Film Festival

Beginning this Wednesday, Fort Worth’s biggest film festival is taking place in Sundance Square through the weekend. The Lone Star Film Festival includes more than 150 films screenings, panel discussions, parties and celebrity appearances.

We’ve rounded up the best five films to see at the festival this year. An all access badge costs $300, and day passes start at $30. You can also purchase individual tickets to films for $15.

The Art of Craftsmanship

This Thursday, Perle on Maple at The Stoneleigh is hosting The Art of Craftsmanship with Heaven’s Door Whiskey. Enjoy a guided cocktail tasting showcasing Heaven’s Door trilogy of whiskeys (Tennessee Straight Bourbon, Straight Rye Whiskey and Double Barrel Whiskey). There will also be light bites by Perle on Maple, and an interactive experience with a blacksmith, who will be hammering knives onsite to provide guests with their own individual keepsake knife.

The event is free for guests to attend who are 21 years old and older. It’ll take place from 4 pm to 7 pm on the patio.

Perle on Maple is hosting The Art of Craftsmanship with Heavens Door Whiskey this Thursday.

Joe Rogan

Comedian and podcast personality Joe Rogan is performing at American Airlines Center this Friday at 8 pm. Rogan has been releasing hit albums and shows for decades, from his I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday CD in 2000 all the way up to 2018 with the Netflix comedy special Joe Rogan: Strange Things. He’s also the host of of the popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience. Tickets start at $39.50.

Tim McGraw Book Signing

Country superstar Tim McGraw will be at NorthPark Center this Saturday, signing his book called Grit & Grace. From 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm, McGraw will be meeting, greeting and signing at Williams Sonoma. McGraw wrote the new book following a struggle with his personal health. Grit & Grace melds his personal fitness transformation with practical advice to help inspire healthy change in readers’ lives.

Tickets include a signed copy of the book and cost $30.

Korean Festival

Head to the Carrollton Asian Town Center this Saturday for the annual Korean Festival. You’ll experience culture and try food. There’s even a K Pop night. The all-day festival also features food demos, traditional performances and more. K Pop performers include Snuper, NeonPunch and DJ Flash Finger. The event is free to attend.

Nutcracker Ballet

This Saturday and Sunday, experience the Great Russian Nutcracker ballet at McFarlin Memorial Auditorium at Southern Methodist University. In the Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker, the story of Masha and the Nutcracker Prince will come to life in this world-class ballet performance, complete with dazzling costumes, stunning sets and timeless music. Tickets start at $29.

Illenium

Denver-based musician, Nick Miller, aka Illenium, is performing at Toyota Music Factory this Saturday night. He’ll be stopping in Irving on his Ascend Tour. The artist has released a number of sensational hits and albums over recent years, including  “Takeaway” featuring The Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella, “Feel Good” featuring Daya, and “In Your Arms” featuring X Ambassadors. Tickets start at $35.

Illenium will perform at Toyota Music Factory.

Cautious Clay

An up-and-coming alternative artist, Cautious Clay, is making a stop in Dallas on his Context tour this Saturday. The Brooklyn-based musician, songwriter and music producer is known for his soulful sounds, digital elements and great musicality. The R&B/hiphop/indie performer is set to take the stage at Granada Theater at 9 pm with special guest Remi Wolf. Tickets start at $24.

Simple Plan

Simple Plan is back and stopping at House of Blues Dallas on their Where I Belong Tour this Sunday. The multi-platinum, award-winning band will feature act State Champs, a New York-based rock band. Known for hits like “Welcome to My Life,” “Perfect,” and “I’m Just a Kid,” Simple Plan has traveled the world playing their famous rock anthems, including the 2010 Winter Olympics. Tickets to the show start at $36.

Alessia Cara

Not a weekend event, but worth a night out on Monday evening, Alessia Cara is performing at South Side Ballroom on her The Pains of Growing Tour. The 23-year-old, Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer/songwriter came onto the scene in 2015 with her sensationally popular album Know-It-All, featuring the 2016 No. 1 hit single “Scars To Your Beautiful.” Her newest album includes popular singles “Trust My Lonely” and “Out Of Love.” Ryland James is the featured guest.
