Two Houstonians Look to Survive the Craziest Reality Season Yet: MMA Fighter and Truck Driver Take on Foes, an Island and Cyclones

The thrilling and often skin-crawling hit reality show Survivor is back for more. Now, in its 37th season, its new cast includes not one but two badass Houstonians. Carl Boudreaux and Bi Nguyen are out to prove they will survive. Hey, hey.

The Space City contestants are two of the 20 castaways going for the gold — and million dollar prize.

Boudreaux is a Beaumont-born truck driver vying for title for the good of his family, according to his CBS bio. What’s the plan?

“To win a million dollars to put my family in a better financial situation,” he says. “I love the show and have always wanted to be a part of it.”

MMA Fighter Nguyen’s a newer viewer but every bit as hungry for a win.

“My first season I watched was Season 35, ‘Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers.’ I thought I could definitely dominate this experience and win. If I would’ve seen this show earlier, I would’ve applied years ago,” she says in her official bio.

She may have been living under a rock when it comes to reality TV, but Nguyen’s been busy. She kicks butt and takes name as mixed martial arts fighter “KillHer Bee.”

This season’s Survivor setup comes across like some kind of twisted social high school experiment. It’s “Davids vs. Goliaths,” pitting “Davids,” participants who’ve faced adversity and come out the other side, with “Goliaths,” advantaged participants hell-bent on using the Davids’ weaknesses against them.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. The reality pioneer is banking on an unexpected level playing field.

“This extreme game of social politics will focus on ‘underdogs’ versus ‘the favorites,” and reveal that every ‘Goliath’ has an Achilles heel, while every ‘David’ has a secret weapon,’ ” the season’s new promotional mantra goes.

It’s certainly guaranteed to be a dramatic season. This season was set in the Mamanuca Island in Fiji — and filming was disrupted by not one, but two, cyclones.

Boudreaux and Nyugen are both in the David tribe. Tune in September 26 at 7 pm for the season’s kickoff episode. Maybe it’ll foreshadow if the Houstonians are going to Survive and thrive.
