J.J. Watt dropping to one knee and asking Kealia Ohai to marry him is predictably sweeping the Internet. But what’s gone largely unnoticed among the frenzy is that Watt’s surprise marriage proposal included breakfast.
Yes, the Houston Texans game changer proposed in a romantic oceanside setting — on a rocky sliver of land jetting out toward the sea with a mega yacht in the background — and then had breakfast and champagne waiting for him and his bride to be. Now, that’s getting it done.
You’d expect the guy who raised an incredible $37 million for Hurricane Harvey relief to be good at planning.
He certainly seemed to have everything ready for his big proposal to Ohai. Wearing a simple white T-shirt and jeans that fit the relaxed setting, Watt made the most of the couple’s Memorial Day weekend getaway by popping the question amid a picturesque perch.
“I’m the luckiest man in the world. #SheSaidYes,” Watt tweeted with pictures of the couple’s sweet proposal moment.
Watt and Ohai have been dating for three years, finding plenty in common (from their shared workout intensity to their love of dogs). This union between two professional athletes — Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and Ohai, the captain of the Houston Dash and a former North Carolina University soccer star — is certainly a power packed one.
But it’s the sweetness between Watt and Ohai that really seems to capture people’s hearts. These two cheer each other on with a genuineness that comes through — and means much more than all the Instagram likes they rack up. Watt and Ohai have each helped the other recover from major surgery. They’ve pushed each other through rehab — and celebrated the good times that followed.
Including the monster comeback season from Watt that many didn’t expect.
“Still can’t believe I get to be with you forever,” Ohai captioned an Instagram post after the proposal. “I love you @jjwatt.”
Ohai’s older sister Megan is already married to former Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing. Hey, it helps to like your in-laws.
Now, two of Houston’s biggest sports stars are ready to get married. Sometimes, the good guy and the good girl both win.
And nothing says winning more than champagne and breakfast. Watt and Ohai went with plenty of fresh fruit and omelettes for their engagement meal on the ocean.
Some things are just right.
