Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker’s Personal Stylist Shares Her Advice On Forgetting Trends and Finding Your Own Style

Inside Betsy Beaman's Work With Cowtown's Best-Dressed

By //

Some stylists find their start working in luxury retail while others grow followings on Instagram. Fort Worth stylist Betsy Beaman’s journey began by learning how closely personal style is woven into how people see themselves — and how they want others to see them. As a child, Beaman had a natural confidence wearing bold or even mismatched outfits, something that didn’t come as easily to her sister.

“Her self-worth and her view of who she was was often rooted in how people commented on what she wore,” Beaman tells PaperCity. “I really started B Beaman Stylist to help people find their personal style and have fun getting dressed again.”

With so much online noise about what to wear, Beaman sought a new path with her company, one rooted in empowerment and education. She aims to break a cycle she frequently sees among her clients: Someone spots an outfit online, orders it, tries it on, and wonders why it doesn’t look the same on them.

Those pieces eventually end up unworn in an already crowded closet. Even worse, an ill-fitting silhouette can leave someone wondering whether the problem is their body rather than the clothes.

As the personal stylist for Mayor Mattie Parker, along with more than 200 clients across eight states, Beaman has built a loyal following by teaching her clients about their own proportions and complementary colors — whether they’re dressing for work or dazzling others at the Jewel Charity Ball.

Finding Fashion Clarity Through Personal Style, Proportions, and Color

Betsy Beaman says a crucial shift happens when women stop thinking about what others tell them to wear and start considering what works naturally with their own proportions and coloring.

“That shift could move you from a negative mindset into either a neutral mindset or a positive mindset where you are excited to try new things,” she says. “We get so bombarded by ‘This is what you should be wearing and why.’ With the right mindset, you are more confident to wear something that not everyone else is wearing because you’re thinking about yourself and not what people are telling you. We should give ourselves grace along the way because we can’t figure it out all at once.”

To empower her clients to shop with confidence, Beaman focuses on three interconnected areas: personal style, body proportions, and color.

“We treat all the information we talk about, from our silhouette to our proportions, as just data, but that data is going to help you understand why a certain top is not for you. We need to know if we have broad shoulders or narrow hips. Then we do a color analysis, which is really just educating you on your natural undertone. Ultimately, it’s your body and your life. If you want to wear a sequin blazer on a Tuesday, wear a sequin blazer on a Tuesday. I want my clients to come with tools, education, and guidelines. From there, you can find your personal style.”

Dressing Fort Worth — From City Hall to Charity Balls

Easily Betsy Beaman’s most high-profile client is Mayor Mattie Parker, who came to Beaman with her own sense of style. Rather than reinventing Parker’s wardrobe, Beaman looked for ways to give familiar pieces new life. When she spotted Parker’s collection of Longhorn pins, Beaman suggested clustering four or five across the lapel of a jacket or adding them to a scarf — small touches that brought personality to the mayor’s more polished looks.

“Mattie knows suiting and her proportions, but with all the different events that she goes to, she was looking for ways to mix it up,” Beaman says. “One of my favorite compliments after going through someone’s closet and putting something together is, ‘I would have never thought to put that together.’ We found ways for her to show up in a professional world with her own personal style and put together something like 50 different combinations, just from her closet alone, and added some fun personality to her shoe collection.”

Mayor Parker tells us that Beaman is the “real deal.”

“She applies her understanding of fashion and style in a way that is individualized to each client. She also has a great eye for what ‘style’ means for each person and how to incorporate your current pieces with a few new items. She definitely understands the demands of client schedules and lifestyle to make your clothes work with you. And she didn’t judge my disaster of a closet!”

For men and women looking to turn heads at the Jewel Charity Ball or another high-profile gala, Beaman starts by researching the theme and considering the time of day, whether there’s a cocktail hour, and the dress code. For one past jewelry-themed event, she took inspiration from the iridescent colors of one of the featured jewelry designers.

“Then, when we shop, we are always considering what fits, what makes someone comfortable, and what is fun and unique. Even with a black floor-length gown, a brocade fabric or personality shoe can elevate a look.”
