Michelle Obama’s Favorite Designer is Having a Major Moment
And Now, the Self-Taught Star Heads Home to Texas
By Christina Geyer //
When word broke that Texas-born designer Brandon Maxwell was coming to town for a trunk show at Neiman Marcus Downtown this month, our initial thoughts were about First Lady Michelle Obama. A well-known fan of Maxwell’s, she wore a stunning custom gown of his design for a White House State Dinner in August.
But after the Spring 2017 collections were presented at New York Fashion Week last month, the news of Maxwell’s Dallas debut became all the more major. At the legendary Russian Tea Room, supermodel Naomi Campbell and pop star Lady Gaga sat front row. And the reviews were stellar. It was dubbed one of the most energizing, fun collections of fashion week, with Vogue writer Nick Remsen going so far as to call it all a Fashion Moment.
For the stylist turned designer, who is self-taught and who self-funded and launched his company just a year ago, the recent success is ovation-worthy. No doubt his home state will warmly welcome him — and his megawatt Spring 2017 collection.
Trunk show and personal appearance Thursday, October 27, at Neiman Marcus Downtown, 1618 Main St., 214.741.6911.
