There’s a world beyond department-store beauty, and it lives at Forty Five Ten. The luxury retailer’s signature Rare Beauty concept is a destination for skincare, fragrance and cosmetics that go above and beyond, much like Forty Five Ten itself.
The Rare Beauty departments in both the downtown Dallas flagship and Houston’s River Oaks District store are equal parts cozy and open. Natural light (crucial for accurate color testing) allows independent labels such as Koh Gen Do, Surratt Beauty, Malin + Goetz, Byredo, Escentric Molecules, and Gallivant to shine.
Among the newest niche arrivals is Nude Envie, a line of seven paraben-free, vegan lipsticks and a companion lip pencil created by Isabel Madison.
Another newcomer is Gallivant. L’Artisan Parfumeur alum Nick Steward created the London label with veteran perfumers from Paris and Venice. Each small-batch scent is crafted in Grasse, inspired by a different cool, creative urban destination, and meant for nomads of any gender.
Evoking memories rather than places is the guiding principle at Byredo. Forty Five Ten is currently celebrating the Stockholm perfumery’s Bibliothèque—a must for anyone who ever longed to spend the day in a library or curled up with a book. The cult favorite scent originated in candle form, and launches this month as an eau de parfum. Hair perfume and hand crème will follow this summer.
Fragrance is integral to the Forty Five Ten aesthetic, but so is the devotion to color and treatment lines that push the boundaries of innovation. Japan’s Koh Gen Do is a case in point, marrying traditional Asian plant-based beauty treatments with the latest skincare technology in the age of hi-def. Foundations incorporate micronized pigment technology with botanicals to provide moisture, coverage and luminosity without heaviness. New palettes for cheeks and eye announce spring’s arrival, as does the introduction of Koh Gen Do eye liners and mascara.
Even with such a well-edited selection, knowing where to start can be overwhelming. Forty Five Ten customers can book consultations and book customized skincare treatments in a private room. Complimentary makeup applications are also available. This is a beauty space where trying new products is encouraged.
Turns out, rare beauty isn’t so hard to find if you know where to look. At Forty Five Ten, rare beauty is everywhere.
