Cush Living Transforms a Dallas Backyard Into a Spanish Oasis

The Local Company Creates a Bright and Colorful Retreat Minutes From Downtown

It’s not every day that Samantha Falkner, owner of Cush Living, gets to work with a client who wants to embrace color. So, when Dallasite Jill Ritchey engaged Cush Living to create her backyard Spanish escape using vibrant and dynamic colors, Falkner got to work.

Ritchey had very specific design goals in mind for the project to help bring out the Mexican and Spanish influence she had already started to implement throughout her outdoor space. Falkner rose to the occasion. With multiple living and lounge areas, Falkner’s team was able to create individual vignettes, while still coordinating across the entire space. It used a combination of the existing fixtures and furnishings to help dictate color and theme, while still reconfiguring the layout.

Keeping the requested Mexican and Spanish aesthetic in mind, Cush Living’s goal was to create a mix of both whimsical and traditional designs that would cater to the playfulness desired by Ritchey’s children, while also providing a more sophisticated solution for entertaining friends and family. Guided by Jill’s favorite color, red, Falkner designed each collection to reflect the hue — from the bright vibrant reds used poolside to the more saturated subdued tones used on the private balcony.

“We have an amazing outdoor space and it almost feels like you are in a different world as opposed to being in the middle of Dallas, only a few minutes from downtown,” Ritchey tells PaperCity. “My dream was to have furnishings that complemented our existing furniture and to elevate the Spanish-inspired design aesthetic that was already sprinkled throughout our space.

By the time Falkner’s team finished its magic and designed its iconic, custom cushions and accessories, they had used more than 30 different fabrics and trims to bring each vignette to life. As the project was at the height of COVID-19 when delays and shortages were at an all-time high, Falkner says that securing all of the materials needed for this project in a timely manner was a mission in itself, but she was able to find comparable substitutions where needed and complete the project within the estimated time frame.

“I love bright, bold colors and Cush Living helped bring my vision to life,” Ritchey says. “We have always loved to entertain family and friends, and now we get so many compliments on our outdoor space every time we have guests over. Our new Cush Living cushions are my favorite part and the Mexican/Spanish look is exactly what I wanted. The color schemes and pattern combinations are exactly what I requested in our initial design consultation and Cush Living delivered. The quality and extra attention to detail helped transform our outdoor space into our own personal sanctuary. I couldn’t be more ecstatic with the entire experience.”

According to Falkner, creating unique, outdoor lounge solutions (similar to Ritchey’s backyard) continues to be one of the most popular design trends.

“From cabana beds to pool nooks, clients are craving a comfortable space to relax beyond what standard sofas and lounge chairs provide,” Falkner says.

Falkner also added that she’s getting an increased number of requests to create versatile looks that allow clients to flip a cushion to a different color or pattern. Cush Living’s cushions have an average lifespan of five to eight years, and more of her clients are seeing the need for versatility to help accommodate their desire for a fresh look without actually having to replace a single cushion.

For someone looking to follow in Ritchey’s footsteps and take on a similar project, she only has one piece of advice: Have lots of patience and don’t settle for second best,” she says. “Choose Cush Living.”
