When it comes to the gorgeous residences overlooking Houston’s Buffalo Bayou, it takes an expert who can walk that fine line between renovation and preservation. One must both honor the property’s roots while also helping revitalize and bring new life to the property.
For one historically significant, John F. Staub-designed River Oaks residence overlooking the Bayou, Hogue Landscape Services was not only up to the task, but blew all expectations out of the water —we mean, bayou.

Bringing New Life to a Historic River Oaks Property
For these owners, rather than completely reinventing the property, the goal was to simplify an aging landscape while preserving the maturity, scale, and permanence appropriate to the architecture. The landscape was designed around the idea that a renovated historic estate should not look newly landscaped. This home and property have history, and it should reflect that. Mature specimen trees, formal hedging, layered evergreen structure, and extensive groundcover were used to create immediate scale and continuity throughout the property.
Of course, no project is without its challenges. What good project isn’t? Especially some of the most historic homes and properties. They always like to put up a good fight. Here, Hogue found one of the greatest challenges to be access. Large specimen trees were too large to pass through the property’s narrow gates, requiring them to be lifted by crane over the residence and carefully positioned within the landscape. Talk about a sight in the neighborhood!
But that wasn’t all. The bayou-facing portion of the property created another significant challenge. The landscape includes a steep grade approaching 60 degrees, and materials had to be moved manually along approximately 300 feet of slope. Moss boulders were incorporated into the landscape to help slow runoff and reduce erosion, while custom steel retaining structures were constructed along a ravine to support a granite walkway and planted screening.

It wasn’t long before Hogue’s work was put to the test by Hurricane Beryl. Floodwaters entered portions of the lower garden, toppling plant material and depositing invasive grass seed throughout established planting areas. Hogue Landscape Consultant Carl Walsh, who manages the property and led the restoration effort, worked with the team to stabilize, clear, and replant the affected areas while preserving the original design intent. His ongoing familiarity with the property proved especially valuable in restoring the landscape without losing the character and continuity established through the original renovation. All in a day’s work, as they say.
One of the most gorgeous, defining characteristics of the completed property is the transition from the formal architecture and structured gardens surrounding the residence to a softer, wooded landscape approaching Buffalo Bayou. The result feels established, restrained, and appropriate to the history of the home, while addressing the technical realities of maintaining a significant landscape along the Bayou that can stand the test of time. This home is ready for its next 100 years.

A Design-Build-Maintain Philosophy
This stunning property is also an example of Hogue Landscape Services’ broader design-build-maintain philosophy. Creating an exceptional landscape is only the beginning for the Hogue team. Their passionate team believes that long-term horticultural care, irrigation management, pruning, plant health, and continued stewardship are essential to protecting the original design as the property matures.
And that passion pays off. The project received an Honorable Mention in Residential Landscape Design in the 2026 PaperCity Design Awards Houston and was also named a Winner in Residential Installation in the 2025/2026 Texas Excellence in Landscaping Awards.
