In 2012, Louis Vuitton first released its limited edition Objets Nomades furniture designed by some of the most creative designers of our time. The collection, which explores modern arts de vivre while paying homage to the atelier’s special orders of the past, such as the iconic Bed Trunk produced in 1874 for French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza, now includes 13 pieces, ranging from India Mahdavi’s Talisman Table, a folding side table with an electrifying benevolent eye design, to Atelier Oï’s Spiral Lamp which contains light, much as a Vuitton bag contains a traveler’s belongings.
International designers included in the collection are Atelier Oï, Campana Brothers, Damien Langlois-Meurinne, Raw Edges, Patricia Urquiola, India Mahdavi and Tokujin Yoshioka.
The stunning travel-inspired offerings have been on tour at Vuitton boutiques worldwide, and were to debut last September at Houston’s Galleria store but, alas, Hurricane Harvey required a postponement. This enigmatic and imaginative collection will be exhibited and for sale in limited editions in Louis Vuitton’s Houston Galleria store — the collection’s only stop in Texas — this Wednesday, February 21 though March 7.
One particularly vivid objet is the electrifying Bomboca Sofa, designed by São Paulo-based brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana, who have works in the collections of MoMA and other museums. Modeled after cloud shapes and colorful round sea apples, the result is a puzzle in which eight removable cushions are arranged in a rigid shell.
Another fascinating objet is Atelier Oï’s Hammock, which harkens to a sailor’s hammock on a ship, and is fashioned of a spectacular weave of leather Vuitton strips reinforced with gilded rivets.
