Houston’s Most Stunning Houses
From Montrose to Memorial, Modern Marvels Give This Home Tour Real Power
By Rebecca Sherman //
Dominique and Jean de Menil were ahead of their time, building one of the country’s most celebrated modern homes in Houston in 1949. I can’t help but wonder what the de Menils would think of today’s modern architecture — no doubt they’d be intrigued with the scope and breadth of the designs found in the Bayou City alone.
You’ll have a chance to see eight of the city’s sleekest residences this Saturday, September 24, 11 am to 5 pm at the 2016 Houston Modern Home Tour.
A part of the Modern Architecture + Design Society (MA+DS), the self-guided tour features eight homes by notable Houston architects and interior designers, in neighborhoods such as Memorial, Museum Park, Montrose and Bellaire.
It’s a rare opportunity to walk through thee private homes designed by StudioMET, Scott Ballard, Allegro Modern, MaRS Culture, Merge Architects, Dreamscape Modern, and Gerardo Pena. The designers and architects will be onsite to answer your questions.

Highlights from the tour include a high-tech, energy-efficient and sustainable house in Memorial; a Museum Park house designed around three stacked layers of public and private spaces; a four-story townhouse in Montrose with a rooftop terrace; an indoor-outdoor living house in Bellaire, designed around the homeowners’ vintage furniture collection; a house in Memorial Park that pays homage to great Mexican architects Ricardo Legerreta and Luis Barrigan; a home in a modern community development, first of its kind to use a stainless steel and aluminum LED light screen to illuminate facades; and a two-story Bellaire abode that features a geometrical wrap-around staircase with glass handrail. The tour benefits the Lawndale Arts Center.
