So fit and fabulous were the gilded ones who poured into River Oaks Shopping Center for the grand opening of Barry’s Bootcamp that we couldn’t help but wonder who among them would require the high-intensity interval workouts touted by the Los Angeles-based fitness brand.

The irony is that those unfamiliar with Barry’s push-you-to-your-limits philosophy, on seeing the bold Barry’s Coming Soon signs, were thinking Barry’s Pizza. Ha, ha. The joke is on them and me. Of course, we knew it wasn’t pizza. But we certainly now know it’s all about besting, not ingesting, calories.

Barry’s CEO Joey Gonzalez jetted in from Los Angeles to co-host the celebratory evening with Houston general manager Megan Cushing (yes, the wife of former Houston Texans player Brian Cushing). And a party it was with a DJ and strolling electric guitarist amplifying the sounds.

Defying any notion of calorie counting (after all, these partygoers, it seems, work out 24/7), the bar was open, serving specialty cocktails including the BDT (Barry’s Does Tequila) with Don Julio Blanco, lime juice and agave. And let’s not forget the tastings of Don Julio 1942. Likewise, there were trays of trendy Asian noodles and savory squid ink macarons with caviar. As the night heated up, and yes it did, a shirtless model cruised through the sizzling scene dispensing booze-infused popsicles.

The place was wide open for touring with the young and the beautiful swarming into the infamous Red Room, where the abs are crunched and the calories burned; into the locker rooms which are equipped with those oh-so-pricey Dyson hair dryers and Oribe products; and across the space to study the “fuel bar” menu and check out Barry’s workout and athleisure clothing.
