Nasher Prize Weekend is Here
Everything You Need to Know About the Big Gala
By Staff Report //
The Nasher Prize Award Gala is the culmination of Nasher Prize Month, an entire 31 days devoted to celebrating not only the 2018 Prize Laureate, but also honoring the sculpture center as the timeless, diamond in the rough that holds a special spot in many Dallas natives’ hearts.
A slew of art shows, symposiums, and tours have led up to the main event on Saturday, which will be hosted in the sculpture garden. This black tie event is held under the stars and is an opportunity for benefactors to recognize artists who have advanced the boundaries in the contemporary sculpture genre.
The winner is hand-picked by a panel of internationally renowned museum curators, directors, artists, and art historians. This is one of the art world’s most prestigious awards — one that comes with plenty of bragging rights. The Prize Laureate also receives $100,000 along with an award object designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano.
This year’s winner is Theaster Gates, whose artwork is the definition of innovation through his incorporation of sculpture, painting, music, performance, architecture, and even urban planning. So much of his artistic process is taking rundown buildings and transforming them into communal spaces. In some of the most decrepit neighborhoods, Gates sees beauty, and breathes new life into otherwise forgotten settings.
