Oh, those signature lychee martinis and the passings of divine dim sum! We know this sophisticated evening was a celebration of Asia Society Texas Center‘s upcoming Tiger Ball, but who wouldn’t be caught up in the flavorful offerings of Yauatcha? Of course, the party fare played second to the beautiful cornucopia of cultures that the center represents and the who’s who of the city’s international scene that gathered on this night.

As Gigi Huang, Yauatcha brand ambassador, welcomed guests, she recalled that 25 years ago she and Pam Burge chaired the Asia Society gala that was then held at the Petroleum Club. “It’s kind of like life goes full circle,” she said. The 2018 Tiger Ball, saluting all the countries of Asia, is scheduled for March 3 at the center’s iconic home in the museum district.

Stepping into the spotlight on that night will be Tiger Ball honorees Sylvia and Gordon Quan. The former city councilman and immigration attorney reflected on the importance of the center, noting “It’s meaningful when people from America are seen embracing the traditional cultures of Asia . . . It’s about friendship. Houston is so rich in cultural diversity, it’s a real pleasure for me and Sylvia to be honored at this gala.”

The black-tie and national dress gala is co-chaired by Kathy and Glen Gondo, Helene and Stephen Le and Sultana and Moez Mangalji with Judge Theresa Chang and Dr. Peter Chang serving as honorary chairs.

The evening, known for its elaborate decor and inspiring programming, promises to hold several surprises in 2018. Matt Benton, the center’s newly-arrived manager of special events, allowed that all 38 member countries will be saluted and promised “something different.” As if putting an exclamation point on that statement, a crew of colorful lion dancers suddenly snaked their way through the delighted throng.

The spirited evening for more than 150 was chaired by Claire and Khanh Huynh and Helene and Stephen Le.
