Rock Star Artist Gets a Large Scale Nasher Moment

Sterling Ruby Embraces Dallas

The Nasher Sculpture Center has an exciting 2019 ahead with artists like Sheila Hicks, who works almost exclusively with textiles and the exhibition, Elmgreen & Dragset, a show that will mark the Scandinavian duo’s (Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset have worked together as Elmgreen & Dragset since the mid-1990s) first major museum presentation in the United States. One opening we simply couldn’t miss was the Nasher Sculpture Center’s celebration of “Sterling Ruby: Sculpture,” the large-scale exhibition dedicated to the sculptural work of the Germany-born, Los Angeles-based artist.

Sterling Ruby is a bit of a rock star artist, whose multifaceted oeuvre encompasses sculpture, ceramics, installation, textiles, clothing, painting, collage, photography and video. Many artists attempt to work across so many mediums and genres — but somehow their voices are often lost in the cacophony. Not so with Ruby. The Nasher’s exhibition surveys the great variety of sculptural work from one of the most significant contemporary artists of his generation.

The artist himself was in attendance to offer a VIP walk-through of the exhibition and a top-tier roster of art patrons turned out, including Christen and Derek Wilson, Nasiba Adilova, Lilia Kurdelia, Sofia Bastidas, Lucilo Peña, Lisa Dawson, and Fred Holston. Of course, the Nasher’s director Jeremy Strick was also there, helping to guide guests through the show of nearly 30 large- and moderately-scaled sculptures spanning Ruby’s career.

Art wasn’t the only thing on people’s minds that night, as Forty Five Ten had recently premiered new windows at its downtown flagship store created by Ruby to celebrate the artist’s collaboration with Raf Simons for Calvin Klein’s Pre-Spring 2019 collection. A large mobile hung from the ceiling of each window and included highly reflective chrome elements, from a bucket and a baseball bat to half-moon shapes and textile elements such as pompoms and fringe.

Ruby had previously transformed spaces at the Calvin Klein flagship store on Madison Avenue and showrooms in both New York City and Paris.

“Sterling Ruby: Sculpture,” Through April 21, 2019, The Nasher Sculpture Center, 2001 Flora Street. Dallas, 214.242.5100
