Legendary Jeans Innovation, Underrated Kansas City and a Major Journalism Death: What We’re Reading

Our editors are a diverse lot, and are constantly perusing a long and broad list of publications and sites. Fashion? Art? Architecture? Culinary studies? In What We’re Reading, PaperCity shares the wealth.

I have long admired the mind of Robert Hughes, and I look forward to dipping into his forthcoming posthumous memoir, The Spectacle of Skill. Vanity Fair has an adaptation from the work here. The Spectacle of Skill: New and Selected Writings of Robert Hughes, will be published later this month by Alfred A. Knopf.

Levi’s. The jean brand is indisputably one of the most recognizable names going, and has been for a long time. We all have a pair (or four or 20), and the numbers by which the models are known are legend: 550, 501, et al. I enjoyed this look at the man in charge of the company’s Eureka Innovation Lab. Did you know that dead indigo will not dye?

Kansas City is a great place, and one can find some really good barbecue there. The baseball is not so bad, either. But what about architecture? Yes, architecture. Seems the midwest portion of the U.S. is a hotbed of interesting projects.

Arnold J. Karr, who passed away on November 6, was a giant in fashion journalism. He taught at FIT, and spent a majority of his 40-year career at Fairchild.
