The Met Gala’s 13 Best Dressed Celebrities — the Most Unforgettable Moments of a Campy Fashion Prom

Supermodels, Hollywood Hunks, Music Superstars, Oh My

BY Reed Robertson // 05.07.19

People of Earth, I am about to make a statement so big you might want to take a seat. OK, here we go.

I love fashion (pauses to read the room).

But seriously, I love it. And last night’s Met Gala, “CAMP: Notes on Fashion,” reminded me exactly why I love it. The Met Gala, or as I call it, Fashion Prom, was so magically multicolored, so epically glam, so bouffantly plumed, I am beside myself with Fashion Namaste.

So without further ad0, let’s take a look at my top lewks from the Pink Carpet. The choices were very hard to whittle down. Making this fashion lineup was truly a herculean task. But, I channeled my inner-strong Britney and made my perfect list of Campy Queens and Boisterous Beaus.

Cara Delevingne in Dior

Fun fact: I love Rainbow Bright. I also love Carmen Miranda. And I had a not-so-subtle crush on Rufio in the movie Hook. So yeah, to me it’s perfection.

Yes , Eye’m winking at you .

Janelle Monae in Christian Siriano

Please read this in the voice of Tyra Banks: THIS WOMAN CAN SERVE A DANG LEWK Y’ALL! And ya know, I have also thought to myself, Why not wear five hats at once? It elongates the lines. She just doesn’t do any carpet wrong. She only works in right.

Jared Leto in Gucci

This man does nothing but win in my eyes. A chic red Bea Arthur-esque gown? Yes please. The severed head of his possible twin? Amazing. A bejeweled neckpiece? Perfect, we’ll go somewhere dressier for dinner. I love you, JL.

Naomi Campbell in Valentino

Even though Joan Collins was one of her dates, Naomi would still be my pick on Valentino Love Connection. This drape-y, lingerie, casual-sex-kitten vibe was everything. The lavender hue? I can’t take the perfection. I need an antacid. I’m verklempt.

Celine Dion in Oscar de la Renta

I just have to say, whatever fashion switch Celine flipped in her head that made her want to kick off this cou-tour de force of fashion — I know, that was a really good one, right? — I would so love to write it a thank you note. Also, clock the headpiece. And the poses. Mama is serving, and I’m having seconds!

Lady Gaga in Custom Brandon Maxwell

I think her look was the most anticipated of the night, and Mother Monster did not disappoint. Especially when she not only came in one look, but she showed off four looks total, and all in an artfully artistic exhibition on the Pink Carpet, no less.

Ezra Miller in Burberry

The suit was exquisite, but the real action was happening north of his lapels. This trippy eye motif is so extra, it’s chipotle guacamole and I am here for it. The dramatic execution of his whole turn on the carpet is deserving of not one but two rounds of applause.

Saoirse Ronan in Gucci

Game of Thrones goes to The Met! Move aside Khaleesi, there’s a new Mother of Dragons in town, and she’s got a killer beach bob, to boot. This is maybe one of her best carpet looks to date. Proud of you, sis. Even if I still can’t correctly pronounce your name.

Ciara in Dundas

There were many Cher-inspired ensembles from last night’s Met Gala, but this ’70s disco-diva moment stands out above the rest. Neither a gypsy nor a tramp, but she may be a thief the way she stole that carpet from all the others with the big hair, big attitude and legs for days.

Kacey Musgraves in Moschino

Show me a woman having a better 2019 than Kacey Musgraves. I’ll wait. This is the absolute definition of our Camp theme. She is literally a living Barbie Doll, fashioned directly from the Moschino Barbie herself. Life in plastic really is fantastic. Who knew?!

Zendaya in custom Tommy Hilfiger

I waited with bated breath for what my reigning fashion queen would wear, and the audible gasp I made when her dress began to illuminate and poof out set off a car alarm down the street. This Queen, nay Princess — bazinga —  and her Slayer Stylist Law Roach know what the fashion children want and they give it to us every. single. time.

We just have to bow down to this rainbow cotton-candy confection. It’s over-the-top, loud and almost too much, which is just enough for me. The sheer fearlessness of this look makes my tummy go bubbly in all the right ways. A veritable Campy Dream.

Honorable Mention:

Shawn Mendes in Saint Laurent

He looks like Danny Zuko and I do a mean rendition of Sandy’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” so I think this could really be a thing.
