Legendary Rapper Puts Tennis Whites to Shame
Colorful New Collection Evokes the Bold 1970s
By Ashley Coley //
Pharrell Williams is adding yet another layer to his ever-expanding alliance with Adidas. Following in the footsteps of Thom Browne’s Wimbledon-inspired collection of adroitly frilled skirts, blazers, polos, and other sports accessories, the rapper is producing a tennis series of his own.
And it’s awash in colors. Bright colors that grab your attention — and put ordinary tennis whites to shame.
Williams’ collection is 1970s inspired — using color-blocked motif — complete with dramatic hues of yellow, red, royal and navy blue. The array of shorts, jackets, knitted sweaters, tennis skirts and synchronizing sneakers are playable though. They were designed to endure a heated match on the court with performance friendly sneakers and moisture absorbing technologies built around Adidas’ Climacool tech.
This collection comes shortly after Pharrell’s collaboration with tennis legend Stan Smith on the Tennis Hu icons collection for Adidas. The line is dubbed Pastel Pack and includes a variety of original Adidas leather Stan Smith kicks and revamped mesh Tennis Hus all done in pastel colors. Better yet, the 70-year-old Smith and Williams star in a variety of ads together, showing plenty of shared charm.
The Adidas Tennis Collection by Pharrell Williams will debut on August 31 on adidas.com and in select stores nationwide.
