Nantucket Grows as a Summer Design Mecca Thanks to Houston Power Woman: Record Fundraising Shows How Texas Generosity Travels

BY // 08.15.18

If you thought that Houston’s A-listers summer exclusively in Aspen, you had best think again. This August has seen the chi-chi island of Nantucket teaming with an impressive coterie of our town’s social leadership, many of whom have summer homes there.

As chair of this summer’s venerable Nantucket by Design event, Phoebe Tudor has been leading the season’s wave of socials from the Lone Star state.  In fact, she and her husband, Bobby Tudor, welcomed design world leaders and devoted disciples to their Nantucket home for the welcome cocktail reception that launched four days of design inspiration.

The Tudors have been spending their summers in picturesque Nantucket for more than two decades and fell so in love with the island that they built a home there 13 years ago. “Nantucket by Design brings some of the country’s top interior designers to Nantucket, and benefits the history and preservation of the community,” Phoebe says. “It combines so many of my interests and is such a fun week!”

The major fundraiser of the Nantucket Historical Association, the design conclave annually attracts top-tier designers for four days and nights of lectures, panel discussions, luncheons, dinners and cocktail receptions as well as the annual meeting of the association. Phoebe has served on that board for a number of years, just as she has provided leadership with Houston Ballet, the Hermann Park Conservancy, the Julia Ideson Library and so many more organizations.

Anyone familiar with Phoebe’s fundraising talents will not be surprised that this year’s Nantucket by Design raised more money for the association than ever before.

The draw included such high-profile talents as House Beautiful editor in chief Sophie Donelson, designer David Kleinberg, floral/event diva Cathy B. Graham, former Houstonian Chesie Breen, and designers Amanda Lindroth, Victoria Hagan, Navid Netto, Nick Voulgaris and more.
