Utter the word barbecue anywhere in the state of Texas, and not only will ears perk up, but you’ll likely find yourself steeped in the debate about just who does it best. This Saturday, October 9th, from 11 am to 4 pm, you can judge for yourself as pitmaster Jim Buchanan hosts the Pitmaster Party: Wild Game Edition at his historic barbecue temple — Dozier’s BBQ in Fulshear.

Benefitting the Fulshear Police Foundation, Buchanan brings his best along with his friends in the barbecue world. The lineup of chefs stoking those slow-burning embers includes Buchanan, Anthony McDonald of Dozier’s and guest cook Robert Lerma; Patrick Feges of Feges BBQ (Houston); Quy Hoang of Blood Bros. Barbecue (Bellaire); Russell Roegels of Roegels Barbecue (Houston); John Brotherton of Brotherton’s Black Iron Barbecue (Pflugerville); Ara Malekian of Harlem Road BBQ (Richmond); Brett Jackson of Brett’s Barbecue Shop (Katy); and Scott Moore of Tejas Chocolate & Barbecue (Tomball). The Pitmaster Party also will feature live music from Dan and Kev on the Dozier’s deck.

“The pandemic has really shut down a lot of the cool events that the BBQ community in Houston has done over the past decade, and this is an opportunity for us to come together in a festival format,” Buchanan says. “It also gives people in the Fulshear community the opportunity to experience something that I don’t think has ever been done out here.

Given the directive to prepare a dish using wild game meat, the competition should be fierce. With the start of hunting season upon us in Texas, it should inspire some delicious and inspired competition, too. (FYI, besides possessing a reputation for great barbecue, Dozier’s is also one of the largest deer processing centers in the Houston area.)

You can purchase tickets for $75 that entitle you to a taste of it all through the Fulshear Police Department.
