Where to Eat in Houston Right Now: The 10 Hottest Restaurants for March

BY // 03.07.18

Editor’s note: The Houston restaurant scene is constantly changing, with new hotspots, must-try places and major foodie events coming along on a daily basis. Even the most dedicated eater can have trouble keeping up. Don’t worry, PaperCity has you covered.

Here is March’s must-eat restaurant list:

Yauatcha

At Yauatcha, the sleek upscale Chinese restaurant in The Galleria, it’s dim sum and then some. The Houston Yauatcha is the eighth in the world and the second in the entire United States. The London outpost earned Michelin stars, in part for its unique signature dishes.

Yauatcha’s prawn shu mai, baked venison puff and bean curd cheung fun are crowd favorites. Diners can order from the extensive a la carte menu. Yauatcha also offers a bevy of Asia-inspired drinks, with hints like lemongrass, lychee fruit and umeshu. The signature menus include black truffle roasted duck, stir-fry scallop with lotus root and Macadamia nuts, and more.

Night Heron

Agricole Hospitality’s Night Heron has taken flight. The restaurant in the old Lowbrow space at 1601 W. Main is both very Montrose and international, with food inspired by the owners’ “travels, both near and far.”

Worldly bites include Singapore chili clams, Jerk chicken and Jasmine Rice Congee. The menu is geared toward shareables and a fair share of craft cocktails. Enjoy a classic old fashioned or Negroni with dinner.

Shandy fans are in for a treat. The amber-colored summer beverage, a combo of beer and lemonade, takes a walk on the wild side here. Night Heron substitutes a Milk Stout for the light beer and goes for a sharper lime citrus.

BCK

Bosscat Kitchen & Libations’ followup restaurant is sure to satisfy everyone’s inner child. Nostalgia fuels the entire menu, with dishes you’ll remember from your formative years — with a little liberties thrown in. Pasghetti is what you’d call gourmet SpaghettiOs, with zesty tomato sauce and locally sourced franks. Find them at 933 Studewood.

The menu features many American flavors with some Asian and Italian influences, like the sweet and sour meatballs and Korean-style shrimp and grits. The cocktails aren’t to be overlooked: The Dr. Feelgood is served in a Dr. Pepper can.

You’ll recognize the Cap’n Crunch Berries milk in the Berry Crunch Milk Punch. We’re guessing you’ve never had it this way before.

The team behind Bosscat Kitchen + Libations opened a second restaurant concept this this month. Say hello to BCK.

Holman Draft Hall

Midtown’s new bar isn’t so much 99 bottles of beer on the wall as 100 beers and wines on tap. The bar at 820 Holman has a comprehensive selection of local and national beers, ranging from crisp and clean to dark and roasty, and everything in between. On hot days, sip on frozen specialty cocktails, courtesy of the bartenders over at Wooster’s.

Brandon Silva, the highly-regarded former Uchi sous chef, developed the food menu, best defined as thought-provoking pub fare. The trio of nachos is the foundation. Holman Nachos are pretty standard, with seasoned beef and queso fresco. Not so with Tandoori Nachos, covered in marinated chicken and feta, and Korean Nachos, smothered in bulgogi beef and citrus Gochujang.

Yoyo’s Hot Dog

This one’s an oldie but a goodie. Yoyo’s Hot Dog food stand, usually parked a stone’s throw from Rice University at 5555 Morningside, keeps students and passersby full but wanting more. One frank will only set you back $5 — but one just won’t be enough.

At first glance, they might seem too much to tackle: a hot dog with curry ketchup, caramelized onions, spicy mayo, Sriracha, fried onion flakes, and cream cheese, all in a grilled bun. It’s grown more popular in recent months, even landing on Yelp‘s Top 100 Places to Eat list for 2018.

Its No. 73 ranking is surely deserved, judging by the long lines and nightly regulars.

Better Luck Tomorrow

Looking for a craft cocktail bar with some refined bar bites? You’re in luck. Better Luck Tomorrow offers both, courtesy of talented mixologists and famed chef Justin Yu, the man behind Oxheart. Diners can order the elevated bar food until midnight at 544 Yale.

The menu’s made up of classics like fried potatoes and crispy chicken, plus the far-out chilled seafood of the season, like sliced octopus with Tunisian hot sauce. The Party Melt is a crowd-pleaser with crispy cheese and caramelized onions.

Some drinks have flavors complex enough to be a dish themselves, like the Rocket Man, a concoction of pepper-infused Vodka, curacao, pineapple, lime leaf and Korean chili flakes.

Better Luck Tomorrow, a neighborhood bar from Bobby Heugel and chef Justin Yu, is now open in the Heights.

Snooze AM Eatery

This all-day brunch bonanza certainly didn’t sleep through its alarms. Snooze, started in Denver, has spread throughout the country and set up shop in four different Houston area locations, including The Heights and Montrose.

It consistently attracts long lines for good reason. Six styles of Benedicts are there to egg you on, ranging from chile verde to lox-style salmon and cream cheese. Six sorts of pancakes await too, including the ever-changing Pancake of the Day. Get that one while you can.

You can even get breakfast in a glass with morning cocktails such as Bacon and Eggs, a concoction of bacon-infused whisky, house sour, bitters, frothed egg white and bacon. No, really. It’s a drink with eggs and bacon in it.

Golden Bagels & Coffee

This new classic, New York-style bagel spot is already the toast of the town. It’s turned 3119 White Oak, in The Heights, into a destination. The bagels here are authentic, with the occasional Gulf Coast twist — courtesy of local cured and smoked fish.

Bagels come in the flavors you know and love: plain, everything, poppyseed, blueberry, sesame, and more. Behold the bold flavors when it comes to a variety of spreads and even hummus. Wash it all down with a strong cup of Katz Coffee.

Blue Nile

Feeling something family-owned, flavorful, and authentic? Look no further than Blue Nile, a treasured Ethiopian restaurant at 9400 Richmond and that soon will be opening a River Oaks location at 3030 Audley.

The extensive menu features a range of meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes. You’ll find familiar samosas, but injera may be all new to you. The flat, spongy bread is made with the nutrient-rich teff grain, and it’s a mainstay in Ethiopian cuisine. You can enjoy it by itself or scoop up some hearty stews with it.

The signature Blue Nile Special Kitfo, an extra lean beef dish, comes with Ethiopian spices and ayb, Ethiopian cheese. Lamb dishes are plentiful. The lamb is cubed and served with different vegetables and sauces.

Zayed’s Mediterranean Grill

The family behind CityCentre’s Zayed’s Mediterranean Grill has been perfecting their cuisine for the last 40 years. The owners hail from Syria and bring their heritage to hot-off-the-grill chicken, lamb, beef and fish goodies. It wouldn’t be a Mediterranean grill without shawarma and kebabs, and Zayed’s does not disappoint.

Tackle a daily special over at 797 Sorella. Options include the day’s special meat with anywhere from one to four sides. Vegetarians and vegans won’t miss out. They can opt for specials with a sampler, falafel, or a veggie kebab.
