George Springer and His Wife Throw the Ultimate Bowling Party For Kids: World Series MVP Proves to be an All-Star Off the Field Too
BY Shelby Hodge // 07.12.18George Springer welcomes youngsters to the fourth annual Camp SAY fundraiser/bowl-a-thon.
What: George Springer‘s fourth annual All-Star bowling benefit
Where: Bowlmor Houston
PC Moment: A clutch of Houston Astros players and coaches joined outfielder George Springer on Sunday for a game of another sort — bowling. Not just any bowling competition, rather several hours on the lanes in support of Camp SAY, a summer camp for children who stutter.
Never letting his stutter get in the way of anything he wanted to do, Springer (the 2017 World Series MVP and an All-Star this season) has made it clear that he wants to impart that same self-confidence that he worked to build to youngsters who also stutter.
Sharing Springer’s enthusiasm for Camp SAY were Astros teammates Chris Devenski, Tony Kemp, Lance McCullers, Brad Peacock, Tony Sipp, and Joe Smith, as well as coaches Gary Pettis and Doug White, Astros manager A.J. Hinch and team president Reid Ryan.
Naturally, after the Astros World Series win in 2017, one would expect the 2018 fundraiser to be bigger and better. And, indeed it was with 450 fans raising more than $250,000, doubling that of the previous year’s bowling fête. Applause, applause for chairs Lara Bell and Melissa DeAyala, junior chair Matthew DeAyala and honorary chair Carolyn Farb.
A host of local media celebs joined the party including Chita Craft, Deborah Duncan, Khambrel Marshall, Ron Trevino, David Nuno, Michael Garfield, Chester Pitts and former Houston Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini.
Winning with strikes: Charlise Springer, Dr. Kevin Smith, Liz and Dave Unger, Randy Bates, Terry Deckard, Corrine and Lee Vela, Russell Masraff, Rod Windham, Lackland H. Bloom III, Jeff Gorski, Roseann Rogers and the outfielder’s parents George and Marie Springer.
