What: The Nasher Prize 2018 Laureate Reveal
Where: The Warehouse
PC Moment: It was an evening of discovery as guests wandered freely through the maze-like display rooms of The Warehouse, anxiously awaiting the name of the artist they will come to know over the next year as a force in the world of sculpture. The 18,000-square-foot exhibition space was graciously opened by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky to once again serve as the setting for the announcement of the prestigious Nasher Prize.
As attendees gathered in the entryway, Jeremy Strick took to the podium to make the grand reveal. If ever given the opportunity to dramatically announce a much-anticipated name to a crowd, one would hope it is a name like Theaster Gates. In addition to the commanding quality of the name itself, the artist who bears it has continually pushed boundaries with his socially engaged works, ranging from sculpture, painting, and music to performance, architecture, and urban planning.
From here, the artist/activist will join in a series of Nasher Prize Dialogues, bringing his unique perspective to global conversations about the future of contemporary sculpture – before culminating with the grand, PaperCity-sponsored gala in April.
On their way out, guests received copies of Phaidon’s monograph on the artist’s works, making coffee tables across Dallas instantly au courant.
Who: 2018 Nasher Prize co-chairs Christen and Derek Wilson, Elaine Agather, Nancy Nasher, Kenny and Joyce Goss, Brandon Kennedy, Gavin Delahunty, Darryl Ratcliff, Maya Crawford, Eric and Sheryl Maas, Alden Pinnell.
