Axe Throwing Becomes a Thing in Dallas
Canada’s Fun Leisure Time Lark is Taking Off —
By Caroline Hogan //
Is it the newest night-time fad or simply a radical way to take out aggression? Whatever it is, axe throwing may just be your solution to a dull summer day, a twist on the typical bowling night or the best backdrop for a birthday or bachelor/bachelorette party.
For the lumberjack in us all, Bad Axe Throwing is taking off, and it is finally coming to Dallas.
The unusual entertainment venue opens this weekend on Friday, June 8 – and with more than 2,000 RSVPs for the free weekend open house already, Bad Axe founder and chief executive officer Mario Zelaya is saying, “I told you so!” to those that doubted him. Growing up in Southern Ontario, Zelaya had a passion for axe throwing from a young age and wanted to bring that same classic, backyard Canadian tradition to the States.
Since opening its first axe throwing location four short years ago in 2014, Bad Axe has expanded to more than 16 locations across Canada and the United States, including centers in Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco and Washington D.C.
New to the axe throwing trend? The sport is exactly what it sounds like – you throw an axe at a target from a distance. It’s similar to playing darts — with much more hardcore equipment.
For this weekend’s main event, Bad Axe is offering free lessons Friday through Sunday, as well as partnering with Deep Ellum Brewing to serve local brews on site. Bad Axe assures that its team of skilled, trained professionals can show you the proper way to throw, making for a safe and smashing time.
Think you’re good enough for the big time? Join the axe throwing league, an eight week competition to see who has the strongest arm.
Beer and axes, what more could a person want on a day off?
