Star Power: *Top Designers Set to Judge *the PaperCity Dallas Design Awards

The PaperCity Dallas Design Awards recognize outstanding residential interior design, interior architecture, retail, restaurant and gallery design, landscape design and historical preservation, along with other categories. On Thursday, October 15, the winning entries will be announced and presented at a cocktail event at Dallas Design District; they will also be featured in the January 2016 PaperCity Home + Art issue. The awards are open to all Dallas and Fort Worth-area design professionals, without regard to professional society affiliation.

The 2015 panel of esteemed judges for the inaugural PaperCity Dallas Design Awards are New York- and San Francisco-based architect Joel Barkley of Ike Kligerman Barkley; NY-based designer Brian McCarthy; NYC-based architect and designer Robert Couturier; L.A.-based designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard; L.A.-based designer Mary McDonald; NYC-based designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller; and NYC-based designer Timothy Whealon.

Curriculum vitae:
Designer Brian McCarthy was a partner at Parish-Hadley before he opened his own firm in 1992. He is on the Architectural Digest AD 100 list, is a member of Elle Decor’s A-List, and his work has been featured in House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, House & Garden, The New York Times and Elle Decor. His newest book, co-authored with Bunny Williams, is Parish-Hadley Tree of Life: An Intimate History of the Legendary Design Firm (Stewart Tabori & Chang), which will be released in October. McCarthy’s first book, Luminous Interiors: The Houses of Brian McCarthy, was published in 2013. McCarthy will speak and sign books on Thursday, October 15, at Dallas Design District Fall Market and will co-present the PaperCity Dallas Design Awards that same evening.

Architect Joel Barkley; Ike Kligerman Barkley’s book, The New Shingled House

Architect Joel Barkley of Ike Kligerman Barkley — the firm whose latest book, The New Shingled House (The Monacelli Press), is out in October — is widely recognized for residential design. The firm has been honored with the prestigious Julia Morgan and Stanford White Awards from the Institute of Classical Art and Architecture and is continuously recognized on the Architectural Digest AD 100 list. Barkley received a master’s in architecture from Princeton University, where he was awarded the Thesis Prize. He also attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, Écoles d’Art Americaines de Fontainebleu, and worked at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, Robert A. M. Stern Architects and Diller + Scofidio before Ike Kligerman Barkley was founded 25 years ago. The firm’s projects were recently featured in Architectural DigestElle Décor and Veranda.

Architect and designer Robert Couturier; Couturier’s book, Robert Couturier: Designing Paradises

Architect and designer Robert Couturier is widely known for designing billionaire Sir James Goldsmith’s 20,000-acre, 60,000-square-foot vaulted and tile-domed hilltop palace, La Loma, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, as well as the surrounding guest villas — the single greatest private commission of modern times. He later completed Goldsmith’s Manhattan townhouse, historic French chateau and Boeing 757. Couturier has been published in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Vogue, Town & Country, The New York Times and House & Garden; appears on the Architectural Digest AD 100 list; lectures widely; and has been selected for The Kips Bay Decorator Show House, Hampton Designer Showhouse and the French American Designer Show House, among others. In his book Robert Couturier: Designing Paradises (Rizzoli, 2014), he states, “I’m completely addicted to luxury. I have no ability for anything else.”

Designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard is the author of Martyn Lawrence Bullard: Live, Love & Decorate (Rizzoli, 2011). His work has appeared in numerous national and international publications, and he is on the Architectural Digest AD 100 list and the Elle Décor A-List. He designed Elton John’s apartment (John wrote the foreword to the book) and homes for Cher, Tamara Mellon, Edward Norton and Eva Mendes; the Colony Palms Hotel; and executive offices at Warner Brothers and Paramount. He was the co-star of the hit Bravo TV show Million Dollar Decorators.

L.A.-based designer Mary McDonald is the author of Mary McDonald Interiors: The Allure of Style (Rizzoli, 2010). Her work has appeared in Town & Country, Veranda, House Beautiful, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and International Vogue, and she designs collections for F. Schumacher, Patterson Flynn & Martin, Robert Abbey and Chaddock Home. Notable projects have included refurbishing Buster Keaton’s legendary villa and renovating the luxe Sunset Boulevard Hotel in Bel Air. She is a star on Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorators and Property Envy.

Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller
Designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller; Carrier’s and Miller’s book, Carrier and Company: Positively Chic Interiors

NYC-based designers Jesse Carrier and Mara Miller are the principals of the firm Carrier and Company Interiors. The firm is a member of the Elle Décor A-List and was named to Architectural Digest‘s AD New Top 100 in 2012. The duo designed Anna Wintour’s home (Wintour wrote the foreword to their new book) as well as homes for Jason Wu and Annie Leibovitz. Their work has been published in Elle Decor, The World of Interiors, Vogue, Traditional Home, Town and Country, W, and House Beautiful. Their first book Carrier and Company: Positively Chic Interiors (Vendome Press) will be released in September. Carrier and Miller will speak and sign books October 15 at Dallas Design District Fall Market and will co-present the PaperCity Dallas Design Awards that same evening.

Designer Timothy Whealon; Whealon’s book, In Pursuit of Beauty: The Interiors of Timothy Whealon

NYC-based designer Timothy Whealon is the author of the new book In Pursuit of Beauty: The Interiors of Timothy Whealon (Rizzoli), to be released in September. Whealon left his first career on Wall Street to pursue his passion in art and design and studied and trained at Sotheby’s in London and New York before opening his design firm in 1994. His work has been published in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Veranda, House and Garden, Architectural Digest, Domino, The NY Observer and The New York Times. Whealon will speak and sign books October 15 at Dallas Design District Fall Market and will co-present the PaperCity Dallas Design Awards that same evening.
