A new dessert bar with a provocative name is opening its first Texas location in downtown Plano in June. Better Than Sex — A Dessert Restaurant takes over the former Plano Kitchen & Bar location at 1010 E. 15th Street.
Known for its sexual innuendos and intimate date-night vibe, Better Than Sex plans to heat up historic Plano.
The new spot’s husband and wife restaurateurs, Derrick Miller and Sheila Phalen-Miller, first discovered Better Than Sex in Key West, Florida on one of their first dates. They then had their pre-wedding dinner with their entire wedding party at the dessert bar.
Shelia had always dreamed of opening her own dessert bar, with a similar concept. When the chance came to open their own franchise, the couple knew that this was something they wanted to do.
“What drew me to downtown Plano was the buildings,” Derrick Miller tells PaperCity. “They work well with what we’re trying to do.”
He also loves that it’s a very welcoming area with lots of foot traffic and there are currently a few other new restaurants coming in. This will be the second Better Than Sex location outside of Florida. The first franchise opened in Savannah, Georgia last fall.
There are also two more on the way in Sarasota and Los Angeles. The Plano location will have some different, Texas-specific items on the menu, as well as artwork with a Southwest, Texas feel, Derrick Miller notes.
Currently, the Better Than Sex menu includes uniquely named desserts such as Double Stuffed, an Oreo bread pudding, Between My Velvet Sheets Cheesecake, and Blueberry Birthday Suit, a buttered up French toast.
Drinks have racy names as well, like the Gang Bang, a four-way of candy inspired shooters, and “Rim Jobs,” which are drinks rimmed with chocolates, caramel or sugar.
“This is a place for date nights or special occasions,” Derrick Miller says. Better Than Sex will be open on evenings and no one under the age of 13 will be allowed in. This is for the adults, kids.
The dessert bar will tentatively open the weekend of June 15th. Stay updated on the progress on Better Than Sex’s Plano Facebook page.
