It was a “euphuistic” evening at this year’s Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, benefitting the Houston Center for Literacy. That word proved to be the winner for team “I can barely spell M-L-P”, sponsored by Kim and Dan Tutcher. Not as serious as your normal spelling bee, comedian Jeffrey James Binney, in from LA, had the packed house at River Oaks Country Club, including chairs Kathleen and James Jennings, in stitches as he made jokes using the words in sentences for contestants (for example, a sheep told another sheep “I’m just not that into ewe”).
