Candice Romo

Co-founder, Hawk + Sloane; Co–chair, Children’s Cancer Fund 30th Anniversary Gala

Cause: Children’s Cancer Fund

Why the Children’s Cancer Fund Matters. This will be my first time working with this charity, but I am so excited about what the future holds because I can only imagine how difficult the journey of childhood cancer would be. I can’t wait to meet the children in the hospital and celebrate them come April at the Candy Land-themed event.

Maintaining family values when faced with fame and media attention? Without a doubt my faith in the Lord is the driving force behind everything I encounter in my daily life. Whenever we’ve come across bumps in the road, I find comfort in knowing that there is a bigger purpose in this life that ultimately gives me perspective. We also strive to value God’s love for us over people’s love for us, or lack there of.

Golden rules of motherhood. Never judge another parent or child: You never know what someone might be going through or know their story. I am also a strong believer that all children are designed differently and should be treated accordingly. There is no handbook on parenting.

Apologize to your kids: We make mistakes as parents all the time. I want my kids to see me humbling myself and asking for their forgiveness when I know I have made a mistake.

Strong women who have influenced you. The obvious answer to this is my mother. She sacrificed her whole being to make a career out of being a mom. As a mom now, I look back and I am amazed at her loving patience, wisdom, and work ethic over all these years. What I value most is her affection for the Lord and how not just her words but also her actions attest to that.

Life lessons you hope to teach your kids. My hope for my kids is that they love the Lord and that they are kind and considerate to others. I want to teach them hard work and humility, and most importantly know how to do their own laundry.

The importance of giving back. I have always been taught, ‘to whom much is given much is expected.’ Nothing we have is because we deserve it; I believe everything is a gift. So with that being said, Tony [Romo] and I hold high importance to being generous with our money, time, and resources.

More about this series: Dallas is a city famed for giving back. Each year, NorthPark Center recognizes our city’s most influential philanthropists who are making differences in our community to garner further exposure for their favorite charities.

NorthPark Center Luxury Ambassadors are hand-selected for their contributions and efforts in the areas of visual and performing arts, children’s causes, and research in health and sciences. Each year-long ambassadorship offers the opportunity to partner with NorthPark Center for various initiatives and events benefiting their favorite North Texas non-profit institutions.

The program was formed in 2016 as an extension of the shopping center’s “Fifty Years of Giving” anniversary celebration in 2015.
